...IT'S EASY TO BE GREEN 

My business colleague and friend, Jim Miller and I were talking one day and he was telling me how his business has changed over the last two years.  Jim writes mortgages and, lately, the economy has not been very conducive to success in this industry.  As a matter of fact, most brokers are out of business, yet Jim was prospering. He told me his story and I was amazed.  It was a powerful testimony about getting involved with a charitable organization and how his business grew dramatically due to his involvement in a cause that is near and dear to his heart. He attributes his success to doing good deeds for others, not with the intent to profit, but with the wish to be a part of something positive;  which includes the Givers Gain philosophy  he learned as a member of BNI (Business Networking International).

The organization that he got involved with is Habitat for Humanity of Westmoreland County. Today, Jim is Vice President of the local chapter and the store Manager of the new Habitat ReStore in Irwin.  On top of that, he is the Store Manager of Allied Home Mortgage

The purpose of the ReStore is to get homeowners and business owners to recycle used items instead of sending them to the trash.  The store accepts surplus building materials, furniture, light fixtures, working appliances and just about anything else salvageable. They ask that all clothing be donated to the Goodwill Store adjacent to the Restore.  People looking for value can shop at the store and buy the donated items at a fraction of the original cost.  All of the proceeds will be donated to Habitat for Humanity

So, why are we having an event at the ReStore?  Our focus is helping the Construction Contractors of Western PA succeed.  We have had events in the past where educational opportunities and networking help for the industry were showcased.  Habitat is hoping to spread the word to construction contractors that they can gain great exposure in their community by making a trip to the ReStore and donating the used materials that usually get thrown into the dumpster.

It is also a lesson for all of us.  We need to be Green in our thinking. 

• Donating your stuff so others can benefit is being 


• Green.


• Helping Habitat gain funding so that a family can have a roof over their head is being


• Green.


• Learning how to capitalize on the tax benefits of recycling is


• Green


• Having a better understanding of what can be reused instead of put in a landfill is Green
